Laura is like a tent caterpillar relentlessly devouring all my favorite novels while doing her enemas. Mostly I’m delighted that she is reading with such a passion, but I’m also a little torn about whether or not I want these books back afterwards. I’m tempted to follow the lead of Michael Holroyd’s mother, as described in his book Basil Street Blues. Before the family was allowed to read any library books, she would bake them in the oven to kill off any germs.
