Laura’s mom Toby came to visit today and Laura curled up in her lap. ‘I felt so safe. I haven’t lain in my mother’s lap since childhood when we would watch Hedy Lamarr and Joan Crawford movies together.’
Toby is 83 and has dementia, so she changes stories around a bit nowadays. Today she told old stories about her childhood growing up in Poland and Palestine before emigrating to the US in 1938. She can still navigate New York like a native and took the subway on her own from Forest Hills, Queens to the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
The pair drank green juices together and when Toby said she was in the mood for potato soup, Laura thought: ‘Oh boy, do we have the soup for you!’ and happily fed her the leftover Hippocrates soup (a Gerson staple). Toby pronounced it: ‘Delicious!’ Unfortunately Laura doesn’t feel the same.
Oh my word! Laura, your mom is soooooooso beautiful. And Lucie takes after her. What’s up with that?
