italian grandmothers

It is nearly 80 degrees.  Yet in every village we pass in Puglia there are tiny little Italian Nonnas (grandmothers) who look like prunes – the sun dried essence of age all dressed in black; black woolen cardigan, skirt and shoes and thick grey stockings, flicking brooms, pegging out washing, peering out of windows (certainly not surfing the net like the four in the image above).  They are straight out of central casting. At times it feels as if we’ve time traveled back 40 years to our first family holiday in the mediterranean.

  1. Coucou Lucie, je vois que tu passes un bon séjour en Italie avec ta famille. Je suis sûre que cela te réconforte de les avoir près de toi. La photo des nonne me rappelle beaucoup mon arrière grand mère espagnole, petite et toute ridée, toute de noir vêtue. J’ai la chance de l’avoir connue jusqu’à mes dix ans. Elle cuisinait fabuleusement bien, je m’en souviens encore. Ce que tu dis de la cuisine des Pouilles (Puglia), me donne envie d’y aller!
