‘Does it make any sense at all to know that it ends badly for all of us, even the happiest of us, and that we all lose everything that matters in the end – and yet to know as well, despite all this, as cruelly as the game is stacked, that it’s possible to play it with a kind of joy?..who knows maybe that’s what’s waiting for us at the end of the journey, a majesty unimaginable until the very moment we find ourselves walking through the doors of it, what we find ourselves gazing at in astonishment when God finally takes His hands off our eyes and says:  Look!’   Donna Tartt – The Goldfinch

I’ve been a voracious reader all my life. Studied literature at university. But for a whole year now (ever since Laura was told she was terminal) I couldn’t concentrate, couldn’t escape into fiction. Everything I’ve picked up, I’ve discarded after a chapter. And then I picked up Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch. On the face of it the worst book imaginable for me, about someone losing the person they love most in the world. But it captured my heart and reeled me in.

  3. Perhaps I should try on this book. I haven’t been able to concentrate on any fiction since my accident, couldn’t even get beyond one page. The only few books I’ve read since 21/2 years (no more than 4) were of “inspirational” nature, how to survive the present moment and move on to the next moment. Survival guides to keep me from drowning. From the quote you posted, I can say that Donna Tartt’s writing style appeals to me. I had never heard of her before. There is always something to learn from your blog, Lucie. Thanks for sharing. -Angelika

  4. I downloaded the free sample of 90+ pages on my I-pad and like what I have read so far. It’s a thick book, though…., 700+ pages. Are you through the whole books yet, Lucie?
