Sips of Sweetness

New Year’s eve was a hard day, Laura was more delirious, agitated, confused and weaker than before. But sometimes like a jack in the box she lights up, pops up and can hold a conversation.  The evening was full of those moments.  At 7pm the nurse brought in a little bottle of fizzy apple cider and two champagne glasses.  I played our favorite songs (our absolute favorite is Cat Power singing Wild is the Wind) and we toasted each other, Laura jiggled around to Phyllis Nelson’s Move Closer (her wild dancing always charms me) and Laura started to recount some of her favorite moments together.  She would tell me one thing, fall asleep for 5-10 minutes, wake up and continue as if nothing happened. This lasted for about an hour and a half .  It couldn’t have been sweeter.

On New Year’s Day, Dr Moryl’s team tweaked Laura’s medicines again adding Haldol to the cocktail, and it worked like a miracle.  She was brighter, chattier and more lucid.  But it stopped working overnight.   We hear that the team is coming to our rescue again today.  Thank goodness for their agility, skill and compassion.
