Celebrate

I am celebrating a pinnacle in a journey that began long before I met Laura. Eleven years ago my life was very different. I had to wash my hair almost every night to stop myself from tearing at my scalp. It would burn so badly that even when staying with family or friends, I often got…

My Dear Sis

My dear sis is growing stubble on her head, she says.   The chemo is over and her body is trying to rebound, sprout some new hair and return to vibrant health.  Chemo sounded miserable. After the first round she wasn’t sure she would be able to do the whole 3 month course.  Her liver…

Motherwort

Motherwort sounds like something dropped into the cauldron by the witches in Macbeth, ‘eye of newt, toe of frog..howlet’s wing..’ But this herb, whose Latin name is ‘lion heart’, is the perfect remedy for grief. Herbalist Robin Rose Bennett gave it to me when Laura was dying. She writes in her new book The Gift of…

The Castor Oil Miracle

For the first time since Xmas, mum is walking again.  Manuka honey soothed the pain of her badly ulcerated toes and light daily rubs of  castor oil sucked out the inflammation and healed her feet. Castor oil is sticky like glue and tastes vile, but it is super rich in Ricinoleic acid, an omega-9 fatty acid,…

Multiple Sclerosis – A Recovery Story

When I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2004, I felt like the sky had fallen on my head. But it solved a lifelong mystery. By my mid 40s I had spent over 5 years of my life in bed with bouts of extreme fatigue. When I was ill it felt like all the energy…

Inspired

Wow! I was bowled over this morning when I switched on my laptop to find the blog got almost 5,000 hits in one day and so many kind messages of love and support from meditators on the Deepak Chopra site. It lifts my wings and makes me feel less alone. It was exactly a year…

High Blood Pressure

Yesterday mum went to get her blood pressure checked and her doctor produced something that looked like a 1950s bicycle pump and started puffing away as if he was blowing up a life raft (evidently digital equipment hasn’t made it to the British health services yet).  He is a kindly young man, eager to find…

Gerson Revisited – part two

Laura and I really believed in the Gerson diet and its power to cure cancer and other diseases (we have friends from the clinic currently on the diet who are doing well – bravo, bravo. bravo!!!!). But the founder of the diet Dr Max Gerson is long dead, and his wonderful daughter Charlotte (who we…

Fever + Cancer

Laura’s has had an unimaginably hard week what with her on/off fever, rigors, drenching sweats (three nights in a row), coughing and vomiting.  Yesterday, at the suggestion of her oncologist, we visited a local urgent care unit for a chest x-ray. It showed no metastasis (YHEA!!!!!!) and no sign of pneumonia (which the oncologist feared)….

Blood Work Update

Dr Cervantes at the Gerson Clinic in Mexico isn’t happy with Laura’s blood work. Her sodium and chloride levels have dropped too low, her LDH (the cancer marker) has leapt up to 390 and he is worried she isn’t eating all her meals, especially on castor oil days.  This is a big deal.  It’s really…

Brain Waves

Here’s Laura doing her impersonation of Olivia Newton John (it’s all about the headband). OK so she could be a sleeping sushi chef…She is  actually trying out a new device called the Fisher Wallace Stimulator to cure her depression, anxiety and insomnia.  It worked for that other 70s icon Carly Simon, who uses it for her depression…

Weekend Warrior Schedule

We’re trialing a new version of the Weekend Warrior schedule for our kind-hearted volunteers. We’ve pruned the schedule way back so it’s now 3.5 hour shifts (instead of the mammoth 5 hour shifts of yore) and we’re asking for just one Weekend Warrior for each shift (instead of two people each morning and one person…

Gerson French Fries

On castor oil days Laura usually can’t eat her soup, never mind her baked potato, because she feels bilious and poorly.  But we’ve discovered a neat trick, Gerson ‘French Fries’. You bake them in the oven for an hour @ 350 F (absolutely no salt or oil!). Even on her worst day, Laura will happily…

Shopping

If we had a car, this is what it would look like. Our weekly shopping feels as if we are catering to a ravenous pony (all the carrots, apples and oats) and a coffee addict. Here’s Laura’s weekly shop list (all organic) – 60 Granny Smith apples 50 gallons of distilled water 30 lbs of…

Blood Work Update

Today, Laura had her first phone check-up with Dr Cervantes at the Gerson Clinic in Mexico .  He reviewed her blood work and said her urine PH 8.5 is too alkaline (apparently this happens to most Gerson patients after 6 weeks), so he wants her to eat a little animal protein. Her ears perked up…
